Successful Fishing in the Mediterranean
The title of the book is of the essence: if you want to fish in the Mediterranean successfully you really need to know what you’re doing. Whether targeting bluefin tuna with poppers and heavy rods, amberjacks with live squid, leerfish with spinning gear or pan-size seabream with natural baits, this book with its approximately 70 pages of technical advice provides details of the best methods for all kinds of large and small predators.
Jürgen Oeder is indebted to skippers and local fishermen for many of the easy-to-understand tips described in this book, such as fishing on the surface for seabream species with a “SpongeBob”. This entails sewing a lump of household sponge into a nylon net which is saturated with sardine oil and attached to the end of your main line. When cast carefully with two baited traces attached to it, the sponge serves simultaneously as weight, float and attractant – easy if you know how!
The first section of the book contains some 60 pages of information on the best fishing destinations and at what times to fish in Croatia and Spain. It also provides coordinates for numerous wrecks suitable for bottom fishing. The final third of the book describes 45 of the most important fish species and recommendations on how to cook them – to ensure that successful fathers and sons know what their catch is called. A bright idea: the author has classified the various species according to their habitat and appearance, for instance multi-coloured to multi-coloured, demersal fish to demersal fish, which facilitates identification.
