To find a good charter captain among many is not easy for us. Holidaymakers who fish for pike or carp at home and have no big game experience are then dependent on the promises of the captains. Some of them take advantage of the guests’ ignorance: Also on Mallorca. There, a skipper offers fishing for blue marlin (with several stolen photos from all over the world on his website), usually takes 5 anglers on board, trolling – very professionally – lures and a fender teaser up and down and tells the disappointed customers, “bad day today, bad luck”. They don’t know that there are no Marlins in the Mediterranean.

To my amazement, this scam has been working for years.  – Also on the island of Gran Canaria. There, unscrupulous skippers fill the boats with tourists, “sell” everyone a rod, on Marlin for more and on Mahi Mahi or Wahoo for less money and sail a little up and down under the coast. The result at the end of the day is sobering.

I am surprised that now a Dane with his two sons has not given up hope despite such a Canary trip and has agreed with Capt. Vince Riera in Alcudia/Mallorca on Wednesday a light trolling day in the bay. “The three were very reserved at the beginning and their first question was ‘Do we catch a fish today?’”, Vince remembered.

They did, because Vince discovered a good spot for Dentex in the days before and also the right colour for the wobbler. At the end of the day it was a hattrick. Papa had – as it should be – the biggest with just 9 kg and the boys the two smaller with 5 and 3.5 kg.

And there were only bright faces board. The three anglers had their faith in Big Game and Vince was happy about his heaviest Dentex of the season so far. They will be caught until the end of July. So check out what’s to come…
